Installing rainwater tanks - can save you money and water

The Government is offering a Rainwater Tank Rebate to encourage you to store the rainwater run-off from your roof to use on your garden – a great way to save and recycle water.

The size of your property will determine the size and type of tank you need. Read the National Rainwater Tank Guidelines.

Recycled grey water – for flushing toilets and watering gardens

Grey water is the wastewater from our showers, baths, spas, hand basins, laundry tubs, washing machines, dishwashers and kitchen sinks. Important: It doesn't include water from toilets.

Used appropriately, you can water your garden with grey water and recycle around 400 litres of fresh water each day.

Did you know ...

To recycle 'grey water' can require just a few fittings attached from your shower and/or laundry. The simplest systems involve a pipe from your shower or washing machine to a slotted pipe buried underneath the garden soil.

Alternatively, you can install a domestic grey water treatment system (DGTS) which produces a higher quality grey water to use in the garden and to store water for use when required.

Tip

You can install rainwater tanks on the side of your house (or under your house) to capture water from your gutters and downpipes to use on your garden.
